Phrygian is the third mode of the major scale. It is made by starting on the third note of the major scale and playing up to the major third an octave above. For example, the third mode of C major (C D E F G A B C) is E Phrygian (E F G A B C D E). Relative to the root note of this mode, the intervals making up Phrygian are 1, b2, b3, 4, 5, b6, b7. It is a minor scale with a very dark sound that is often described as “Spanish.”
