Locrian is the seventh mode of the major scale. It is produced by starting on the seventh note of the major scale and playing up to the seventh an octave above. For example, B locrian consists of B C D E F G A B, since B is the seventh note in the C major scale. The scale intervals relative to the root (B) are 1 b2 b3 4 b5 b6 b7. Locrian is very rarely used as a tonal center, due to its dissonant quality. In principle, locrian can be used on the minor 7 b5 chord; but in practice, many players prefer simply to arpeggiate this chord or use other scales over it such as locrian #2.
