Aeolian (also known as the natural minor) is the sixth mode of the major scale. It is produced by starting on the sixth note of the major scale and playing up to the sixth an octave above. For example, A aeolian consists of A B C D E F G A, since A is the sixth note in the C major scale. The scale intervals relative to the root (A) are 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7. Aeolian has a dark minor sound and is commonly used in rock, pop, and classical music. Aeolian is less common in jazz, where dorian and melodic minor sounds are often preferred.
